What is the VE Session?
The VE (Volunteer Examiner) Session is for conducting tests for new ham licenses or upgrading existing licenses. The SARA VE Session is an in-person session, so you must be present at the exam site listed in the exam announcement to take an exam.
The VE Session will offer exams for the Technician, General, and Amateur Extra ham radio licenses. You will indicate the license(s) you wish to take exams for when you register online.
Registering for FCC CORES / Obtaining a FRN
You are REQUIRED to register in the FCC CORES system and receive a FCC Registration Number (FRN) before exam day. Your FRN will also be required to register for the exam session online.
The FCC CORES system may be accessed via the link https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do.
If you don’t already have a CORES account, select REGISTER and follow the instructions to create a new account. If you already have a CORES account, enter the username/password and log in.
To create a FRN for your account, after logging in, select the link ‘Register New FRN’. If you already have a FRN (obtained pre-CORES), select the link ‘Associate username to FRN’ to link your CORES account to your FRN.
Registering for the Exam
To register for the exam, follow the link https://hamstudy.org/. Select the option ‘Find a Session’. Now locate the appropriate session by date and location as published in the exam announcement. Note the fee for the session, select the session, and follow the instructions to complete registration for the session.
What to Bring on the Day of the Exam?
One legal photo ID
If a photo ID is not available, then bring two forms of identification.
If you already have a license and are upgrading, bring a printed copy of your existing license.
Two number two pencils with erasers and a pen.
You may bring a calculator, but if it has memory or stored functions, they must be cleared prior to the exam.
Mobile phones must be turned off prior to the exam. Other electronic devices such as tablets, iPads, etc., may not be used during the exam.
