Jon Spargo said that it cost $15 each for the 5
Cottonwood school children who took the technician exam. He is continuing to
instruct the three boys who did not pass. One of their parents will take
them to Deming this Saturday to retake the exam. Jon has removed the power
supply and the radio at the school and will keep them at home during the
summer. He will invite the students for the field day. The teachers want Jon
to continue teaching in the fall. There seems to be a growing respect for
and interest in amateur radio among the students.
Vern Leavitt announced that 4 from Socorro ARES
attended the SICWG meeting in Albuquerque on May 4-5. The meeting focused on
the problems posed by various response agencies each using different
frequencies and modes of communication. Vern and Doug sat in on a planning
session for a communication drill to be held in District 6 (SW counties of
NM) next year. There is an extraordinary amount of planning necessary for
such a drill.
Vern also announced that we learned some things from
the drill conducted by the Socorro Hospital on May 12. The ARES group was
put on standby.
Old Business:
Field Day planning signup sheet was passed
around. There will be three transceivers: CW will be inside in the radio
room in the EOC, the sideband will be in the communication trailer in the
parking lot and the third in Datil. Jon Spargo offered his portable grill.
Jim Oty offered his gas fired grill. Jon needs $100 for food. Start supper
at 6:00 PM. Publicity by Dave Finley. It was suggest we invite Don Tripp,
Ravi Basker, Fred Hollis, Jerry Wheeler and other public officials. Penny
suggested making a public announcement at a city council meeting. Al has the
login forms. Dave Johnson likes the login software on his laptop.
Ham Fest planning We need caps and shirts for
the ham fest. Vern knows a man who has hats and shirts. There is a setup fee
for stitched patches. With an order for 75 patches there is no set up fee.
Ray Calkins will contact Joel Domschot to confirm that the Fire Academy will
host the Ham Fest.
