Minutes of the SARA Meeting

SARA MEETING MINUTES - April 9, 2008 (approved May 14, 2008)

Meeting called to order at 7:32 pm by Vern Leavitt

Announcements:

• Johnson was asked if he had heard from Ham-Com and he had not.  Johnson asked Al Braun if he could forward the original email request.  Braun will see if he can do so

• Leavitt recommended attendance at the weekly Saturday morning coffee at El Camino.

Approval of Minutes

It was moved and seconded that the minutes be approved.  Penny Lommen indicated that the commitment to research insurance was reported in her absence.  Bill Brundage indicated that, "Glenn (Mauger) recommended all ARES members volunteer as well for the same reasons."  The motion was amended to amend the minutes accordingly and the amended minutes were approved.

Treasurer's Report

Bill Brundage reported that as of March 31, 2008 the SARA portion of the balance in the treasury was $4,625.19.  The TARA balance is $320.08. 

Reports

• LEPC - Jon Spargo reported that the last meeting of the LEPC was cancelled.  LEPC will meet this month as scheduled.  
• ARES - Jon Spargo reported that the Albuquerque office of the National Weather Service recently checked into the Socorro ARES net with an alert of high winds and fire danger in the Socorro area.  

Old Business

• Insurance - Penny Lommen has researched liability insurance locally.  Coverage can be separated into: general liability, event coverage and director/board coverage.  General coverage is cheaper by comparison to both event and director/board coverage.  Lommen will double back to clarify the coverage originally offered through the ARRL sponsored agency.  

• Festival of the Cranes Special Event Station - Jim Lommen has communicated with Robin Harrison who is in charge of the 2008 Festival.  Harrison carried the request to have a special event station at the assistant director of the Bosque del Apache NWR.  The request was denied as not in keeping with the spirit of the event.  Discussion for the special event station turned to holding the even in conjunction with festival activities in Socorro.  There will be continued research on this option.

New Business

• 2008 SARA (KC5ORO) Field Day Planning - Options for the Socorro Field day event were discussed.  The general consensus was to return to the Plaza.  Bill Brundage will contact the City of Socorro regarding arrangements.
• Hamfest - Leavitt will expedite obtaining the ARRL sanction.  Discussion revolved around
  • providing food at the Fire Academy so that attendees might stay on site longer and not be be attracted to meals in town,
  • planning some kind of static display/competition for collectors to maintain interest into the afternoon, and 
  • making the same arrangements for 2008 as we used for the 2007 banquet.  
• Friends of the Library have donated several ham related books to SARA which will be availabel for checkout to members.

Good of the Organization

SARA lacks a nominee for President to complete the slate of officers for the May election.  Members were asked to consider serving.
