SARA MEETING MINUTES - August 8, 2007 (approved
September 12, 2007)
Call to Order:
The meeting was held in the
Emergency
Operations
Center, 198 Neel Avenue, Socorro, and called to order by President Vern Leavitt at
7:30 PM. Fifteen attendees signed in. Eighteen were counted as
attending. Special guests Doug and Kathy Figg and their grandson Ethan
were introduced.
Announcements:
The Duke City Hamfest is scheduled fro August
17-18, 2007. SARA/TARA Hamfest fliers will be taken by Dave Johnson to
the hamfest to be circulated.
The Alamogordo Hamfest is scheduled for September 1,
2007.
Leavitt thanked Johnson for contacting local
newspapers to list meeting of SARA.
Guest Speaker:
Doug Figg made a presentation on horse shoeing that covered certification,
various types of shoes, forging, and some problems encountered in
shoeing.
Approval of Minutes: The date
listing for the July meeting was corrected and the minutes were accepted as
amended.
Treasurer’s report: the checkbook balance last month should be $3807.06 (when it is
available) of which $280.08 is earmarked for
TARA
.SARA funds amount to $3527.98.
Reports:
ARES/LEPC: At the last LEPC meeting new officers were
elected and Spargo is now "out of the LEPC business." The plan
is essentially finished with parts already submitted to the State who has
provided feedback. The final plan should go to the state in about 2
weeks. After corrections resulting from that review, the plan will be
set for ratification by local political entities.
Old Business:
Fat Tire Fiesta: Brundage reported that the Fiesta is currently scheduled
for November 5th, however, the endurance race will likely be scrapped and
the date of the Fiesta could change. SARA support will probably not be
needed.
Chili Harvest Triathlon: Brundage asked volunteers for this event to
meet with him after the meeting for assignments. Volunteers include:
N1IRZ, KA0YYP, KD5UHB, KB5YIW and NM5WB.
Hamfest
Finley will have an updated draft flier ready
for distribution at the Duke City Hamfest
Banquet options were considered. El
Sombrero was considered, but the requirement for a minimum number of 40
seemed to limit this option. The firefighters can provide food for
~ $5-$5.50 per head, but a venue is needed. Several options were
discussed including the building where Sammy's was located, the Garcia
Opera House and various social organizations and churches. Tom
Frawley will check on one of these.
Kalman Oravecz announced that he would not be
able to officiate at this VE session. Al Braun and a team of SARA
hams are committed to do so. Paula Riley will work to redo signage
for the VE session.
A motion to allocate $1,100 for hamfest prizes
was approved.
Good of the Organization:
Brundage reminded members that SARA once
"had" a mile of I-25 north of Socorro that it cleaned annually for
the NMDOT. He has learned that the signs were taken down because SARA
did not complete the forms required by the NMDOT that indicated that we were
doing the periodic cleanup. After some discussion about what the
responsibility of having the signs entailed, the consensus of the group was
that we should apply to get the mile back. Leavitt took the paperwork
to do so.
Adjournment: The
meeting was adjourned at 9:02 PM.
