SARA MEETING MINUTES - June 11, 2007 (approved
August 8, 2007)
Call to Order:
The meeting was held in the
Emergency
Operations
Center, 198 Neel Avenue, Socorro, and called to order by President Vern Leavitt at
7:30 PM. Eighteen attendees signed in. Twenty-one were counted as
attending. The presence of several attendees were noted: Erwin Haynes
(KI4TBD), a member from Georgia traveled furthest; James Lommen (KC7QY), a new
member recently from Colorado; Jim Boswell (KA5SIW); and Joel Domschot, a prospective
amateur radio operator.
Announcements:
SARA will be providing
communications for the gun club cleanup on Saturday, July 14th.
Dave Johnson was thanked
for the email notices sent to area hams before field day.
Completion of
installation of the 146.68 repeater antenna is scheduled for Sunday morning,
July 15.
The state ARES HF net set for Sunday the 15th in the EOC.
Guest Speaker:
Ed Wood (KD5MFS) presented a valuable orientation on the use of various kinds of
maps and the popular coordinate systems used to locate features on maps.
Approval of Minutes: Minutes
of the June meeting were amended and accepted with a change in the reference
from "MOU" to "contract" for the agreement that SARA has
with Socorro County.
Treasurer’s report: the checkbook balance last month was $3735.68 of which $280.08 is earmarked for
TARA
.SARA funds amount to $3455.60.
Reports:
ARES/LEPC: The core plan is progressing towards completion
and should be ready to send to the NM Dept. of Public Safety for review in
about a month.
Old Business:
Field Day: Bill Brundage (NM5WB) reported on the
2007 KC5ORO Field Day operation in Socorro. The station operated as a
2A station and logged 99 CW contacts and 180 phone contacts during the
event. Dave Johnson (KB5YIW) spoke for the Field Day operation from
Datil Well. W5AQA operated as a 1A station and the 5 operators logged
a total of 245 phone contacts.
Ham Gear Donation: Jon Spargo (K5NTW) reported
on the progress of the disposal of Dave Asmus' ham gear. All equipment
has been removed from his former home and some of the equipment has already
been sold. The plan is for SARA to erect the towers on behalf of
Socorro ARES, sell the remaining equipment ending with a final sale at the
SARA/TARA Hamfest, give the proceeds to Asmus along with a letter from SARA
communicating the value of unsold items.
Hamfest: The ARRL Sanction for the 2007 SARA/TARA Hamfest has been
received.
New Business:
Fat Tire Fiesta: Bill Brundage (NM5WB)
reported on a recent meeting of the Socorro Riders and Striders where the
Fat Tire Fiesta was discussed. Plans continue for the November 3, 8
hour endurance event, however, the exact course for the race has not been
set.
Chili Harvest Triathlon: Brundage also reported on
the Chili Harvest Triathlon scheduled for August 11. SARA has been asked to provide
radio coverage. The event will be run on a course modified from
previous years because the City pool is unavailable and the event will
employ the Tech pool in it place. Vern Leavitt (KD5UHB), Dave Johnson
(KB5YIW), Bill Brundage (NM5WB) and Dave Finley (N1IRZ) volunteered for the
event. Tom Frawley (KA0YYP0) may be able to help.
Hamfest: SARA's application to the City of
Socorro Lodger's Tax fund for money to mail posters has been approved by the
Lodger's Tax committee in the amount of $1,370. It is thought that the
City Council will approve this amount, but if it should change, SARA will be
informed 'promptly'.
